Collectibles - Considering This Hobby? Here's Some Things To Consider
Collectibles have been a huge thing for as long as I can remember. My grandmother had cabinets full of costume jewelry and shelves full of old books. It does not matter what it is, there is always someone around who collects it.
I watched a program once about a man who was obsessed with macaroni and cheese boxes; he had over 100,000 boxes from around the world from all different eras. Although this may not be a good example of profitable collectibles, to him and probably only him, it was valuable.
There are several reasons why people will begin a collection. Perhaps they mentioned to friends and family that they liked owls, then before long, their friends and family members were bringing home owl-themed items they had picked up while on vacation to pass along as gifts.
The most profitable of the collectible family is anything from the Coca-Cola history. Some people choose items of nostalgia, such as jack in the boxes, or old games, others tend to collect things from other companies like Pepsi or Budweiser.
There are some kinds of collectibles which will never decrease in value, and will always be eagerly sought after by collectors. The first rule of building a good collection is that the piece must bring joy to you, and be of value to you.
Obtaining collectibles for cash is what I would consider to be the second reason for collecting. You may find that a particular item is very popular and start collecting only to find that you end up with a room full of junk that has lost its popularity and no one wants, including you.
The best advice is to collect only those items that you personally appreciate, since you may be the only one who wants them in the long run. If your goal is to make money with collectibles, you should not hold onto them for a long time in hopes that they will appreciate in value. Instead, you should have a minimal turnaround time on these items.
